Adult ADHD evaluation: a quick guide on the process
Share this resource:
Key Components of the Assessment
Clinical Interview
- Exploration of current symptoms
- The duration and persistence of symptoms
- The impact on your functioning
Comorbidities & Differential Diagnosis
- Many adults with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, trauma-related issues or autism spectrum traits
- The assessment considers whether symptoms are better explained by another condition, or whether multiple conditions coexist
Developmental History
- ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition
- Evidence of symptoms from childhood is assessed (whether or not it is formally recognized)
Clinically significant impairment
- Diagnosis is based on patterns over time - not isolated traits
Rating Scales
- Used as an adjunctive, these support symptom assessment and monitoring
An Adult ADHD assessment is not...
- An online buzzfeed test
- A same-day or rapid evaluation
- Based only on your academic or occupational difficulties
- Assessment outcomes may include confirmation of an ADD diagnosis/identification of alternative and/or co-occuring issues/and recommendations for treatment, accomodations or further evaluation
